Success stories
Legana Cricket Club
"Thanks to the help of you guys, we've figured out how we can split roles down and not rely on too few... it's been pretty amazing in that space."
Background
Legana Cricket Club faced many challenges a year ago. With a structure designed for a smaller club, they struggled with volunteer burnout, limited community engagement, and inadequate facilities.
However, following their work with CLUBMAP, the club has made significant strides in improving its operations, community presence, and overall club culture.
Twelve months after working with CLUBMAP, we caught up with Chris Demeyer, President of the club.
Implementing a tiered structure with detailed role descriptions was key to getting more help at the club. Chris reflected, "Our structure was still one for a small club and didn't suit the seven-team club we had grown into." Restructuring the committee ensured the club was "fit for purpose", reducing the burden on a few individuals and distributing responsibilities more effectively.
More volunteers, better fundraising
By implementing strategies from CLUBMAP, Legana Cricket Club has seen a surge in volunteer participation. The club now has around 20 job roles filled by volunteers, a significant increase from the previous situation where "2-3 people were doing most of the work".
This shift has freed up key members to focus on strategic initiatives, such as advocacy and community relations.
The introduction of a volunteer coordinator has helped distribute tasks more effectively, ensuring that no one is overburdened and encouraging more community members to get involved.
The club's financial health has also improved, with "sponsorships on track to double compared to the previous year". The club has also been successful in securing grants, particularly for youth and women’s programs.
This financial stability has allowed for investments in club facilities and member apparel, boosting pride and unity within the club.
The club is on the brink of a significant move to a new facility adjacent to a school, which promises to enhance accessibility and community involvement. This new ground, expected to be ready by the next season, will provide a modern, spacious venue, setting the club up for long-term success.
Closing thoughts
The transformation of Legana Cricket Club over the past year has been nothing short of remarkable. With the guidance and support of CLUBMAP, the club has not only improved its internal operations but has also strengthened its community ties, financial stability, and overall organisational structure.
This success story is a shining example of how a passionate committee, armed with a strategic approach and community backing can revitalise a local sports club, setting it on a path to sustained success and growth.
