Success stories
KBH Brumbies Hockey Club
"We love using CLUBMAP philosophies, and you know, we want to embrace a lot more stuff as we go"
Initial Challenges
When KBH Brumbies first engaged with CLUBMAP in November 2021, the club faced several challenges. The workload was concentrated among a few individuals, leading to burnout and inefficiencies. There was a pressing need to improve organisational structures, increase volunteer engagement, and find effective ways to involve younger members, particularly those aged 18 to 30.
More volunteers
Since then, the club revamped its committee structure, adding new roles and creating subgroups to distribute responsibilities more evenly. This restructuring was crucial in alleviating the burden on a few individuals and ensuring that tasks were managed more efficiently.
A dedicated role was established to oversee volunteer activities. This position evolved into a welfare-oriented role, focusing on building relationships and empowering members to take on responsibilities, rather than merely seeking help.
Efforts were also made to foster a sense of community and shared responsibility among members. The club encouraged senior players to take on leadership roles, demonstrating the value of their involvement to younger members.
A fundraising coordinator was appointed to spearhead efforts in this area. The club organised several successful fundraisers, ensuring financial stability even during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
The club explored new revenue streams, including sponsorships and enhanced membership programs, which contributed to its more robust financial position.
Outcomes
Overall, the results of these interventions have been outstanding:
The club's overall health check score improved from 42% to 67%, reflecting significant progress in various operational areas. This improvement is a testament to the time and effort the committee has put in over the past two years.
The number of volunteers increased, and tasks were more evenly distributed. This shift not only reduced burnout but also created a more welcoming environment for new members.
The club successfully engaged more young members, integrating them into various club activities and fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
Despite economic challenges, the club maintained a positive financial position, ensuring its sustainability and ability to invest in future growth.
The partnership between KBH Brumbies Hockey Club and CLUBMAP has been transformative. Through strategic planning, structural changes, and a focus on community engagement, the club has built a solid foundation for future success.
As KBH Brumbies looks to the future, they are well-equipped to continue thriving and growing, serving as a model for other community sports clubs.
